Magnetic is a joint Franco-UK initiative that brings together ten institutions to create a new programme of artist residencies of eight weeks each: five in France - CAPC in Bordeaux, Frac Bretagne in Rennes, Frac Grand Large in Dunkirk, Villa Arson in Nice, Bétonsalon in Paris - and five in the United Kingdom – Wysing Arts Centre in England, Flax Art Studios in Northern Ireland, Cove Park in Scotland, Aberystwyth Arts Centre in Wales and Gasworks in London, England. Magnetic will gradually build an expanding network of partner residencies with shared commitments and values.
This year, Magnetic programme will be run in tandem. What does this mean?
Each residency is based on a tandem partnership between one French region and a UK nation. Artists from each one of the five regions in France are invited to apply for the residency based in the associated UK nation; and artists from each UK nation are invited to apply for the residency based in the associated region in France.

Applicants from England are invited to make one application only and can either apply to CAPC, Bordeaux or Bétonsalon - Centre for Art and Research, Paris.
- Societal and environmental issues are at the heart of this programme, the residencies are situated, with the selected artists expected to work according to the focus of each residency, in resonance with each specific context – geographical or historical, societal, artistic etc
- Artists receive a threshold monthly fee of £ 2100/2500 €
- Each artist benefits from curatorial mentoring
- Each residency is tailor-made in discussion with the institutions’ curatorial teams
- Each residency provides the artist with networking opportunities throughout their stay
- Artists are provided with accommodation and access to a work space

Magnetic est une initiative franco-britannique qui réunit dix institutions dans un nouveau programme de résidences d'artistes de 8 semaines : cinq en France — CAPC à Bordeaux, Bétonsalon - Centre d'art et de recherche à Paris, Frac Bretagne à Rennes, Frac Grand Large à Dunkerque, Villa Arson à Nice; et cinq au Royaume-Uni — Wysing Arts Centre en Angleterre, Aberystwyth Arts Centre au Pays de Galles, Flax Art Studios en Irlande du Nord, Cove Park en Écosse, et Gasworks à Londres en Angleterre. - Les questions sociales et environnementales sont au cœur du programme, les résidences sont situées, les artistes sélectionné·e·s travaillent en fonction du focus et du contexte spécifique à chaque résidence – géographique ou historique, sociétal, artistique, etc
- Les artistes reçoivent une allocation de résidence mensuelle minimale de £2,100 /2 500 €
- Chaque artiste bénéficie d'un accompagnement curatorial
- Chaque résidence est conçue sur mesure en concertation avec les équipes de curateur·rices des institutions

Founded in 2003, Bétonsalon – Centre for Art and Research, is located within the Université Paris Cité. Bétonsalon was one of the earliest organizations in France to recognize art’s position at the crossroads of various fields of research, linking artistic practices to their cultural contexts, and asserting feminist and decolonial positions. Today, Bétonsalon's program revolves around sensitive/sensory experience as a factor of experimentation around social, racial, gender and environmental issues, all capable of thwarting the binary representations that oppose theory and practice, reason and sensibility, passivity and activity, or culture and nature, research process and finished work. Developing its activities in collaboration with local, national and international organizations, Bétonsalon has established itself as a source of situated practices and knowledge which generates new angles of approach, a place for artistic research, as much in the field of exhibition as in that of education, as an accessible and hospitable public institution, where the quality of attention is a daily commitment.

Founded in 1973, the CAPC is the city of Bordeaux’s contemporary art museum. In 2002, it received the label ”Musée de France”. It is one of the eldest and most prestigious art institutions in France and is housed within the Entrepot Lainé, a listed building from the 19th century, renovated by architects Valode and Pistre and interior designer Andrée Putman, which now boasts 3,500sqm of exhibition space. Throughout its history, the CAPC has been a platform for experimentation for artists and a site of rich and generous encounters for visitors. The museum’s collection now features over 1,900 works from more than 300 artists from all over the world such as Daniel Buren, Nan Goldin, Sol LeWitt, Annette Messager and Richard Serra for the most established, but also Benoît Maire, Julie Béna, Naufus Ramírez-Figueroa, Danh Vō and Leonor Antunes from an international emerging scene. In 2021, the CAPC also obtained the “Art Center of national interest” label, thus highlighting its role as an exhibitions producer and supporter of various artistic practices on many different levels (regional, national and international).

Frac Bretagne, founded in 1981, is a leading art institution in the western region of France. Through an ambitious program of exhibitions, dissemination and documentation of the collection as well as numerous programs for the public, the Frac Bretagne’s artistic and cultural project, entitled “Making archipelagos”, aims to question the ways in which the institution can address the legitimate aspirations of our contemporary society. Inclusivity, diversity and openness towards other fields of discipline in Brittany and the rest of the world are important facets of its mission, developed through a horizontal and participative mediation policy, the inclusion of the Frac in international circulations, and its dedication to co-productions with other institutions. It is also committed to addressing gender equality and issues of eco-responsibility.

The residency is run by the Frac Grand Large in partnership with the Ecole Supérieure d’art Dunkerque | Tourcoing. Located at a geographic and cultural crossroads (United Kingdom, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, etc.), the Frac Grand Large is the leading actor of a network of regional and European partners promoting the circulation of ideas, artists and artworks. Its artistic project is based on its collection, conceived as a tool to build relations with local communities, and its invited artists and curators who anchor their reflection within a context marked by its industrial history and its transformations.
La résidence est portée par le Frac Grand Large, en partenariat avec l'Ecole supérieure d'art Dunkerque-Tourcoing, site de Dunkerque. Situé à un carrefour géographique et culturel (Royaume-Uni, Belgique, Pays-Bas, Allemagne, etc), le Frac Grand Large est l'acteur principal d'un réseau de partenaires régionaux et européens favorisant la circulation des idées, des artistes et des œuvres. Villa Arson is a highly regarded public institution of the French ministry of culture located in Nice and a member of Université Côte d'Azur. It combines several complementary functions in favour of contemporary creation: teaching, research, experimentation, production, dissemination, promotion and support. The Villa Arson school of art, contemporary art center, artists’ residency and specialized library form a unique ecosystem dedicated to supporting young generations of artists towards professional practices, presenting original artistic visions and facilitating critical exchange with an international perspective. Spread over 13000 sq feet, the Villa Arson art center presents an international exhibition program arising in part from projects led with guest artists and curators who explore the most contemporary artistic practices and generate stimulating encounters. Designed as a Mediterranean village overlooking the Bay of Angels, Villa Arson welcomes residents for its teaching and research activities and within the framework of tailored partnerships for artistic production and research.

Aberystwyth is Wales’ largest arts centre and recognised as a 'national flagship for the arts'. It has a wide-ranging artistic programme, both producing and presenting, across all art forms, including drama, dance, music, visual arts, film and community arts. The Arts Centre is a department of Aberystwyth University and a member of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. It sits at the heart of the university's campus, with stunning views over the town of Aberystwyth and along the coastline of Cardigan Bay.

Founded in 1999, Cove Park is a residency centre located on a 50-acre rural site overlooking Loch Long in Argyll, on the west coast of Scotland. Cove Park is now moving beyond the boundaries of the traditional ‘time, space, freedom’ residency, to include an enquiry-based model to encourage cross-disciplinary work and collective intelligence around pressing global concerns. This model is founded upon the belief that the transformative power of the arts is amplified through collaboration and exchange with other disciplines and sectors – such as those of academic and scientific research, technological innovation, and the creative industries as a whole. Cove Park hosts 12 to 20 residents at the same time.
Fondé en 1999, Cove Park est une résidence en milieu rural implantée sur un site de 20 hectares surplombant le Loch Long à Argyll, sur la côte ouest de l'Écosse. Cove Park dépasse le cadre de la résidence traditionnelle "temps, espace, liberté" pour s’orienter vers un modèle fondé sur la méthode de l’enquête, favorisant le travail en interdisciplinarité au service d’une réflexion collective portant sur les grands enjeux de notre temps. Ce modèle est fondé sur la conviction que le pouvoir de transformation de l’art est amplifié par la collaboration et les échanges avec d'autres disciplines et secteurs –comme la recherche universitaire et scientifique, l’innovation, les industries créatives au sens large. Cove Park accueille en permanence entre 12 et 20 résident·es.

Flax Art Studios has been established for 31 years in Belfast. As the only studio dedicated to sculptural practice in Northern Ireland, it significantly contribute to the regions’ visual art practice through subsidised studio provision and resources. Flax acts as a hub for professional development, international networking, and fostering greater understanding through outreach and engagement. Flax has recently relocated its main headquarters to 29-33 Bedford Street and a satellite
space in the heart of Belfast city centre. Flax provides studio space for seventy of the most exciting artists in NI, reaching over 100 artists/creatives through its production and workshop membership programmes. Flax Art Studios runs an International Residency programme since 1994, has developed an exchange programme with Art Center Ongoing (Tokyo), and is working in collaboration with University of Atypical, Coven (Berlin), and Videoclub (Brighton) to provide residencies specifically for disabled artists. Flax’s artists play a key role in the life of the city, the renewal of its cultural scene, and the overall regeneration movement in which the various associated communities are directly involved.
Flax Art Studios est installé depuis 31 ans à Belfast. Unique structure dédiée à la pratique de la sculpture en Irlande du Nord, Flax met ressources et ateliers à disposition des artistes et contribue de manière significative à la pratique des arts visuels sur le territoire. Flax fonctionne comme un hub qui favorise la professionnalisation des artistes, la mise en réseau à l’échelle internationale et une meilleure compréhension de l’art en plaçant la sensibilisation et la participation au centre de sa démarche.
C’est au cœur du centre-ville de Belfast que Flax a récemment relocalisé son principal espace (29-33 Bedford Street) et son espace satellite. Flax fournit des ateliers à soixante-dix des artistes les plus intéressant·es d’Irlande du Nord et plus d’une centaine de créateurs sont membres de son programme de pratique et de production artistiques. Established in 1994, Gasworks is a non-profit contemporary visual art organisation working at the intersection between UK and international practices and debates. Wysing Arts Centre is a progressive organisation in a rural setting that was established in 1989. We enable artists and publics to engage their imagination freely and take creative risks; we believe that everybody has the right to time and space for creativity, away from the distractions of daily life.
The site is ten miles from Cambridge city. It holds 20 subsidised studios for artists in our region, accommodation for up to 80 visiting artists annually, recording and ceramics studios, flexible space to experiment, present and learn, fields, woodland, and several outdoor outworks. Work made at Wysing is seen worldwide. An accessible digital offer increases reach and archives our work; our youth programme empowers future generations.
Wysing invites artists from across the world to stay and reflect on their practice without the pressure of producing new work: time spent without a plan can often be when the best new ideas emerge. We take a proactive, intersectional approach to equity and inclusion.
Wysing engages people of all ages through artist-led workshops, events, online projects, gatherings and an alternative art school called The Syllabus. Our young people’s programme has a focus on reaching people from rural areas. Wysing is currently building a youth council who will have decision-making powers in the organisation.
